The Song of Seikilos is the oldest known complete song. (There are older melodies, but they’re fragmentary.) Discovered in Turkey during the late 1800s, it probably dates from the first or second century. Engraved in a small marble stand, the song was dedicated by a man named Seikilos to his deceased wife. She may have been named Euterpe, after the Greek muse of lyric poetry. It’s amazing that we can play music created by one who lived two millennia ago. And it reminds us that their lives were as rich and meaningful as our own.
(In this recording, I had a little fun and added some computer generated instruments to my solo guitar performance.)
