Gymnopédie No. 1: Erik Satie (1866-1925)

Erik Satie was a little known cabaret pianist when he composed his three Gymnopédies in 1888. These stately pieces evoke a dance by young athletes in ancient Greece. Hardly noticed when first published, theyve since become wildly popular. I recorded this during a lesson with Summer Hussain, an 12 year old student of mine. There were other lessons going on in adjacent rooms, but we managed to get a reasonably quiet take. (Summer likes cats—hence the painting.)
