Over the Rainbow
Composed for “The Wizard of Oz,” Judy Garland premiered this song in 1939. But it almost didn’t make it into the finished movie. MGM executives at first removed the song, thinking it bogged down the film. Others disagreed. Finally, associate producer Arthur Freed issued an ultimatum: “The song stays, or I go.” MGM studio head Louis B. Mayer gave in, saying, “let the boys have the damned song.” It went on to win the Academy Award for best original song.
