A Spanish composer and vihuelist, Mudarra wrote this work to imitate a famous harpist of his day. At about the 1:26 mark of this recording he indulges in some tangy dissonances. So jarring were they to listeners of his time that Mudarra felt it necessary to include in the score this warning: “From here on to the end there are some false notes, but when played well they do not sound bad.”
