Josie MacDougall started her guitar study with me as a beginner at the age of eight. She’s now at Indiana University majoring in classical guitar performance, studying with Petar Jankovic and Ernesto Bitetti, and is a member of the Indiana University Guitar Ensemble. Josie has participated in master classes with Jason Vieaux, Duo Melis, Colin Davin, Marcin Dylla, and others. In 2014 she won fourth prize at the Indiana International Guitar Festival and Competition in the youth division, and in 2015 she won third prize at Le Domaine Forget Guitar Contest in the youth division. Josie is also an accomplished cellist—as is her father, who is the music teacher at Solon High School and assistant conductor of the Solon Philharmonic Orchestra—and she’s currently taking secondary cello and voice lessons at Indiana University. As a Solon High School student, she competed as Speech and Debate and Future Problem Solvers academic teams, and was also Orchestra President.

“During my years of study with Tom, I learned that technique is vital, but musicality will set a player apart. I learned that the audience is smarter than you think. And I learned that this is a difficult field to pursue as a living—but after my time with Tom, I think I have a fighting chance.”
