Not much is known about Anthony Holborne. He was described as a “gentleman usher” to Queen Elizabeth, which tells us little about what he actually did. But he was respected as a musician, and his more famous contemporary John Dowland dedicated one of his finest songs to him. During the renaissance, a fantasia was a free form piece in which the composer showed his skill in taking a theme and working through it contrapuntally. It’s often cited as the forerunner to the baroque fugue.
