Nocturno, Op. 11, No. 1
Respected in his day as a teacher, performer, and composer, José Ferrer Esteve de Fujadas (1835-1916) wrote music that’s conservative and aimed at the salon. Though seldom performed on the concert stage today, it has a winsome charm—provided it’s played with empathy and affection. Ferrer’s Op. 11 Dos Nocturnos, published in 1888, bears the dedication “A mi querido amigo Dr. Juan Ferran.” The second of these Nocturnos occasionally finds favor with amateur players. But curiously, this attractive first one gets overlooked. Being the runt of the litter, I’ve taken a shine to it. It offers a chance to make the guitar sing.
