Jane Pickering’s lute book is one of the best sources of English lute repertoire. Other than the book owner’s name, we know nothing of her life. It’s only by chance that we know her name at all—the original manuscript is missing a section, but a page bearing her name and the year 1616 is still intact. She likely was a young woman of good breeding, and would be expected to play music for her family. “Drewrie’s Accordes” is a delightful sample from this book. Ms. Pickering doubtless played it with her tutor in the 17th century. Four centuries later, my student and I gave it a go.
